Hills Snyder: Constructions and Drawings (Tyler Museum of Art, 1985)

Hills Snyder: Constructions and Drawings
Tyler Museum of Art
Tyler, Texas
August 3 – September 8, 1985

Snyder creates a sense of a common past, of ancient lore, though it is combined with bits of contemporary
life and culture. He incorporates parts of the figure and other subject matter and, on occasion, actual
objects. There are symbols: letters of the alphabet, a cross, a gate and a road. Also present is a kind
of personal, non-specific imagery. A playfulness and humor in many of the forms is offset by obvious
violence in most of the pieces. We are reminded of champions with tragic flaws or martyrs suffering
and dying unjustly. The overall sensation for the viewer is that of empathy with a familiar, haunting
presence which has the potential to enchant or to disturb.

* Accentuate the Positive

(Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen)

You've got to accentuate the positive

Eliminate the negative

Latch on to the affirmative

Don't mess with Mister In-Between

You've got to spread joy up to the maximum

Bring gloom down to the minimum

Have faith or pandemonium’s

Liable to walk upon the scene

To illustrate my last remark

Jonah in the whale, Noah in the ark

Well what did they do

Just when everything looked so dark
Man, they said you got to

Accentuate the positive

Eliminate the negative

Latch on to the affirmative

Don't mess with Mister In-Between

No, do not mess with Mister In-Between

Well what did they do

When everything looked so dark

What did they do
