Ultralounge: The Return of Social Space (with cocktails) DiverseWorks, Houston May 1 – June 20, 1998 Hills Snyder: Suede Sandbox DiverseWorks subspace, Houston April 24 – May 16, 1998 This exhibit marks the fourth in a series of shows curated by Artist Advisory Board member Susie Rosmarin for DiverseWorks subspace. Suede Sandbox, conceptual cousin of Ultra Lounge, a chill room if you will, a haven, quiet cube, beach scene, psycho-botanical suggestion, modern, archaic, plexiglas reflection, cousin of formica, psychedelic shack, love shack, visitor totem, a way in. Six works: Diva; Vertigo; Slice; Tiki Totem; One Eye, One Horn, One Leg; Ambassador. Not discreet sculpture, but rather components in an overall array, a “semi-site” work, malleable, mutating. Subspace is the site, but Dave’s show is the site too. And the ongoing mutation must also be acknowledged, the overspill, the urge to gather what you feel and take it back with you down the asphalt pathways that connect the comfort zones. Mushrooms and minimalism, nowhere but Texas.
